Vitale, McNeely lead Huskies' resurgence

Northeastern is nearly two months ahead of last season's pace in the wins column. The No. 16 Huskies have won six games, a feat they didn't accomplish last season until Jan. 26.

The Huskies (6-4-1, 6-3-1 Hockey East) beat No. 19 Boston College (3-4-5, 2-3-4 Hockey East) in overtime Friday night, padding their conference lead to three points. Senior Jimmy Russo scored his first goal of the season with four seconds remaining in the extra period. It was the second overtime goal of his career.

So far in the season, however, Russo's younger teammates are outplaying him. Standout junior forward Joe Vitale has a team-leading 13 points on the season (five goals, eight assists), all of which came in Hockey East play.

Along with Vitale, freshman forward Tyler McNeely has a share of the team lead with five goals.

US fans were misled about Beckham - Pele

Soccer legend Pele believes American fans were misled about what David Beckham could bring to Major League Soccer. Amid great fanfare, the former England captain was presented by the Los Angeles Galaxy in July, but his greatest impact has been on ticket sales and merchandise. Pele believes Beckham's introduction was "very, very bad" as it raised expectations about what the former Manchester United and Real Madrid midfielder could produce on the pitch. "They announced him as a scorer of goals," Pele said. "He isn't a goal scorer. That was a mistake." After playing an exhibition match in Vancouver, British Columbia, on Wednesday night, Beckham said "everybody in the world knows I'm not a goal scorer. "The Galaxy wouldn't have come out and said that," Beckham said. "Like I said, everyone has got their own opinions.

KALAMAZOO, Mich. -- After watching the PrairieThunder squander 3-0 and 4-2 leads in regulation, Cory Laylin found himself with a chance to finally put away the pesky Kalamazoo Wings and end Bloomington's five-game road skid Sunday. The veteran defenseman made the most of the opportunity, beating Kalamazoo netminder Jeremy Symington in sudden death to give Bloomington (6-9-0-0) its second road win of the season, 5-4, over the host Wings and move the Thunder out of the IHL basement.Don Parsons figured in all of Bloomington's goals in regulation, including his power play goal at the 3:13 mark of the first period that gave the Thunder a 1-0 lead. Laylin and Sam Ftorek assisted on Parson's fifth goal of the season.Parsons, the all-time leading American goal-scorer in the history of professional hockey, also added another goal and three assists to up his season point total to 17, fourth best in the IHL.Thunder captain Jason Ralph tipped in a rebound for his fifth goal of the year to put Bloomington up, 2-0, just 38 seconds into the second stanza.

Lamentable referee was unfair, declares McLeish

NO MATTER how long he remains in management, it is unlikely any refereeing decision will cause Alex McLeish as much anguish as the controversial award of the free-kick to Italy which led to Scotland's European Championship exit just before 7pm on Saturday.

"Lamentable, just lamentable," said McLeish, shaking his head in a mixture of bewilderment and residual anger some 45 minutes later. The crushing disappointment of Christian Panucci's winning goal, headed home from Andrea Pirlo's set piece as the Group B qualifier entered stoppage time, was still etched on the face of the Scotland manager as he conducted a daily newspaper briefing inside the Hampden tunnel.

If the football media was a bodily function, this week it would have been projectile vomiting. It may turn out to be a defining week in English football so what better time to start a weekly trawl through the highways and byways of football media in all its twisted glory. Monday morning comes on heavy like an illness and so I ease into the international week with the excellent Times podcast, The Game, presented by Gabriele Marcotti and Guillem Balague. Marcotti is the primo pundit and journalist around at the moment. His gig is to be arsy, argumentative and be well armed with facts, figures and anecdotes. Everything he's involved with has a real spark about it. An ongoing theme of the week is the increasingly tedious 'are there too many foreigners' debate. Carragher speaks the most sense on this saying it's not the quantity, it's the quality of them.

Court in session

It might be hard to tell, considering Saturday's pair of Class 4A semifinal football games in the Four Corners, but the basketball season has begun.

Ready or not.

Aztec and Kirtland Central's boys basketball teams are still waiting to complete their squads. With the Broncos and Tigers still in the thick of the state football playoffs, the gridiron games take full precedent over shooting hoops.

Piedra Vista and Bloomfield practiced with full squads for the first time this week, mere days before tip-off. The Bobcats and Panthers' football teams were eliminated from the playoffs last weekend, much to the chagrin of students, coaches and fans.

But at least their basketball teams are at full strength, right?

Quite the contrary, actually. A majority of the area's seven basketball squads agreed that success is infectious.
