Finance ministers meet Dec. 12 to talk dollar and economy

Canada's federal and provincial finance ministers will meet in Ottawa in two weeks for talks on the state of the dollar and the economy.

The talks come as the manufacturing sector cries for help from the effects of the resurgent Canadian dollar.

The loonie regained parity with the U.S. dollar in September and peaked above $1.10 in early November. On Wednesday, the dollar was trading around $1.0072 US.

The loonie's appreciation against the U.S. dollar has been a boon for Canadian consumers, who have seen retailers cutting prices here. Many consumers have also taken advantage of the dollar's rise to shop in the U.S.

However, the country's manufacturers and exporters have seen their competitiveness eroded by the loonie's gains. In September, Canada's trade balance with the world fell to its lowest level since December 1998, as exports declined and imports increased.

PHILADELPHIA Kelenna Azubuike made a 3-pointer from the left corner with 6.1 seconds left in overtime, giving the Golden State Warriors a 100-98 victory over the Philadelphia 76ers on Saturday night.

The 76ers had one last chance after Azubuikes basket, but Louis Williams lost his footing in the lane and turned the ball over.

Azubuikes basket came after Lanphier High School graduate Andre Iguodala gave Philadelphia a 98-97 lead on a runner in heavy traffic with 13.4 seconds left.

Iguodala led the 76ers with 26 points, 11 rebounds and five steals. Golden States Monta Ellis equaled his career high with 31 points.

It was the second tough loss in two nights for the 76ers, who lost Friday at Detroit.

We just have to get a win; we have to do more than just compete, Iguodala said.

Trial date to be set for Vick on state charges

The suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback was not expected to attend a hearing in Surry County Circuit Court to schedule his trial on two felony dogfighting counts. Vick is being held at a jail in Warsaw, Va., after unexpectedly turning himself in Nov. 19 to begin serving time for a federal dogfighting conspiracy conviction.

Vick faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced Dec. 10 in the federal case.

The two state charges - beating or killing or causing dogs to fight other dogs, and engaging in or promoting dogfighting - also are punishable by up to five years in prison each.

Vick's lawyers have indicated they will fight the state charges on the grounds he can't be convicted twice of the same crime.

Vick and three co-defendants, who also face state charges, pleaded guilty to the federal charge in U.S.
