NFL: What's next for our conquering heroes?

WHEN IT rains it pours, or so it is said. Then again, sometimes the rain results in flowers. For the Raiders and 49ers it was a bouquet of roses Sunday. Finally.

Last time both Bay Area teams won on the same day was Oct. 30, 2005, when the 49ers knocked off Tampa Bay, while the Raiders were winning at Tennessee. Home-and-away scheduling has something to do with this, but the last time both teams won on the road was Dec. 8, 2002 — back in the playoff days.

It's been a long wait but, for one day, worth it. Everything the 49ers and Raiders thought they were going to be turned out to be what they were.

The Raiders thought they were a running team but over 10 weeks of the season what they were running was a rather grotesque six-game losing streak.

Then they ran. Justin Fargas and even LaMont Jordan were given holes.

Historic outcome of the national election held on Saturday the November 24, 2007 shows that the Australian nation decided to emerge a new era of Australian politics. More than eleven years old John Howard’s government which considered as strong and stable has been cast off by the people of Australia with clear majority.

The political career of Australia's second-longest serving Prime Minister, John Howard has been finally ended. Provided the postal votes, to be announced in couple of days, don’t change the current statistics, John Howard would loose his own seat of bennelong, New South Wales which he held since 1974. The well-known Australian journalist Ms. Maxine McKew who is a new recruit to Australian Labor Party is about to write a historical defeat for John Howard in a close context.

College mens hockey: Speer pitches another shutout for UWSP

STEVENS POINT -- Thomas Speer figures he has the easy part.

The guys playing in front of him for the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point men's hockey team are doing all the hard work.

Speer posted his second straight shutout, stopping all 16 shots he faced as the Pointers blanked Concordia (Wis.) 9-0 in a nonconference matchup at K.B. Willett Arena on Saturday night.

"Any goalie could have two shutouts the way the guys are playing in front of me. They have definitely been making it really easy," Speer said. "My goal is to give out team the best opportunity to win."

The back-to-back shutouts are the first for the Pointers since the 1997-98 season when UW-Stout failed to find the back of the net in a two-game series.

Since surrendering five goals to St.

NFL notes

EAGLES: Quarterback Donovan McNabb will miss Philadelphia's game today against New England because of a sprained ankle and injured thumb.

McNabb hurt the thumb on his throwing hand early against Miami last Sunday and left after injuring his ankle in the second quarter. He has not practiced all week.

A.J. Feeley, who led the Eagles to a pair of touchdowns in a 17-7 win over the Dolphins, gets the start for underdog Philadelphia.

McNabb has started every game since returning ahead of schedule after a torn knee ligament ended his season early last year. Injuries ended his regular season three times in the past six years. The Eagles are 13-8 without him, including 1-1 in the playoffs last season.

Feeley will make his first start since he led Miami over Cleveland on Dec.

Winning football games requires a true team effort

You hear the buzzer and look up at the scoreboard, and it isn't in your favor. Your body feels sore and your spirits broken.

That is how I felt on my last football game as a junior. I play football for the Madison Academy Mustangs, and we lost to Leeds High in the first round of the playoffs.

Football is probably my favorite sport because of the way the team pulls together. In other sports, you might win with a few good players, but not football. Your team must be solid. If the line doesn't block then the quarterback can't throw the ball.

If the quarterback can't be accurate, the wide receiver doesn't get catches. If the running back can't get positive yards, then the offense must look elsewhere to score. You have to be a well-oiled machine to be a great team.

Trial date to be set for Vick on state charges

The suspended Atlanta Falcons quarterback was not expected to attend a hearing in Surry County Circuit Court to schedule his trial on two felony dogfighting counts. Vick is being held at a jail in Warsaw, Va., after unexpectedly turning himself in Nov. 19 to begin serving time for a federal dogfighting conspiracy conviction.

Vick faces up to five years in prison when he is sentenced Dec. 10 in the federal case.

The two state charges - beating or killing or causing dogs to fight other dogs, and engaging in or promoting dogfighting - also are punishable by up to five years in prison each.

Vick's lawyers have indicated they will fight the state charges on the grounds he can't be convicted twice of the same crime.

Vick and three co-defendants, who also face state charges, pleaded guilty to the federal charge in U.S.

Fans will lose out in NFL Network battle with cable operators

The NFL Network's business strategy is well on its way to becoming one of the biggest flops in sports television history.

All the yap-flapping, spinning, and perhaps even some anger from fans who cannot watch Thursday's Packers-Cowboys tilt on NFLN won't change that fact.

Neither will all the anti-cable rants coming from the mouth of Jerry Jones, whose sudden concern for the average fan is the leading candidate for Most Disingenuous Sports Moment of 2007. Nor will the well scripted, well presented words of commissioner Roger Goodell, who last week was on the stump campaigning against cable monopolists via a conference call.

Surprised we have not heard from NFLN boss Steve Bornstein, marked conspicuously absent on this recent propaganda tour. It looks like Mr.
