Waller leads Hills by example

WAYNE -- Mike Roman watched Tim Waller play linebacker, how he pursued the ball, how he hit people. Then he realized he wasn't the only one watching, that his teammates, too, were trying to emulate his Wayne neighbor's football instincts. But while they all strove to match Waller's level, the bar had been set fairly high.

Sam Donnellon | Bold standard works, Andy

A.J. FEELEY'S passer rating suffered greatly from his three interceptions Sunday. Which is why the passer rating is one of the silliest statistics in all of sport.

Because Feeley could just as easily have thrown six picks the way he was slinging it out there against the Patriots. That touchdown throw to Reggie Brown in a crowd just inside the goal line, the one Greg Lewis practically picked from the hands of two defenders in the back of the end zone, and about a half-dozen others he completed could easily have gone the other way, and led to the final score oddsmakers had in mind.

Which leads us to Andy Reid - doesn't it always? The Eagles' play-calling was so wonderfully bold and unpredictable that by the end of the third quarter you felt someone had dropped a big, unexpected holiday package at your doorstep.

BCS could expand at-large pool

The Bowl Championship Series will expand the pool of teams eligible for at-large bids if it's faced with a shortage of qualified contenders when the season is over.

BCS rules state a team must have at least nine victories and finish in the top 14 of the final standings to qualify for an at-large bid to one of the five marquee bowl games. But because no conference can have more than two teams, including its champion, in the BCS, officials were facing the possibility of not having enough eligible teams to fill the 10 spots this season.

The BCS announced Tuesday that if fewer than 10 of the top 14 teams in the standings are eligible for an at-large bid, the qualifying standard will extend to the top 18. If enough teams are still not available, the standard would be pushed back four spots until the pool is big enough to fill all the bowls.

California partners with Brownsville for soccer team

California is now partnered with Brownsville in a co-op varsity soccer team. However, the California School Board voted Nov. 15 to allow California to form its own soccer team next year.

The co-op was originally formed because California didn't have enough players to form a complete team, which requires about 22 players. Terri Doman, a California School Board member for four years, said when the co-op began, it was with the understanding that when California had enough players to form a team, it would move back to California and play for its own school.

The next step California needs to take in order to form its own team is to secure the approval of the WPIAL. Since WPIAL already approved the co-op team for another two years, California needed to send a letter stating that it has formed its own team.

Madison left in the dark for big game

You've fumed at the NFL Network. You've vented about Charter.

So now what, Green Bay Packers fan? If you're a Madison cable subscriber, you're not going to be able to watch Thursday night's game -- quite possibly your team's biggest game of the regular season -- from your living room.

But you've exhausted your rage on the involved parties, so what's left to do besides go out and find a place to watch the game?

Maybe while you're doing that, you can think of people in the Green Bay, Appleton and Milwaukee areas that aren't going to be so inconvenienced.

That's because NFL broadcasting rules give those markets the right to show the game on over-the-air television stations. WFRV/Ch. 5 bought the rights in the Green Bay/Fox Valley market; WISN/Ch. 12 was the highest bidder in Milwaukee.
