| Romani puts a pretty face on Rotary, but music lets it down
It certainly isn't the glitziest service organization on the planet. Nor one of the most cutting-edge. But its rather humble image notwithstanding, Evanston-based Rotary International is still a worthy global group of concerned citizens who wishes to make the world a better place. For the last several years, Rotary has entrusted Romani Bros./Chicago with the task of helping the world at large better understand what RI is all about. Denny Hebson, a Romani partner, once jokingly noted that many people steadfastly cling to the notion Rotary is nothing more than a bunch of old men who gather for lunch every month. But the Rotary campaign with the tag line "Rotary. Humanity in Motion" that Romani has been evolving clearly suggests otherwise. Each of Romani's two newest executions comes at the aforementioned theme in quite different fashion.
Teams will study what Eagles did against Patriots
Maybe a little too much. To be certain, the Eagles' strategy on both sides of the ball did plenty to disrupt the Patriots and nearly resulted in one of the greatest upsets in NFL history. To be certain, the teams left on the Pats' schedule and those they could face in the postseason have a great deal to ponder in reviewing all that the Eagles did to make for a long and unnerving night for Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, and everyone else in Patriot Nation. But of those clubs, which are capable of generating the same relentless blitz pressure that the Eagles did on Brady, while playing man-to-man coverage, and control the ball by mainly attacking the middle of the field through the air as A.J. Feeley did so effectively? Not many. The Baltimore Ravens, who face the Patriots in Week 13 on Monday Night Football, have some talented linebackers who can blitz well, but their banged-up and inconsistent secondary could easily be overwhelmed by one of the most talented groups of receivers in the league.
Cruel defeat snuffs out European dream
IN THE end, the emotions were not so much mixed as scrambled to the four corners of Hampden. We had seen Italy score in 70 seconds, we had seen them dominate the early minutes with some chilling football that not only took the fire out of the home support but also shocked Alex McLeish's team to the core. But in the final stages of the game it was the world champions who had the heat coming on them, their lead wiped-out by a scrambled Barry Ferguson goal just after the hour, their assurance of before in danger of being stripped away. With ten minutes remaining, Scotland drove forward once again, the substitute Kenny Miller linking with James McFadden and sending the most delicious ball across the Italian penalty area. The Azzurri were at sixes and sevens, Fabio Cannavaro and Gianluca Zambrotta, two of the game's pre-eminent defenders from two of the world's most glamorous clubs, were over-run.

Gogoi now rushes into award for cricketers
Two days ago, as Team India defeated Pakistan in the first one-day international cricket match at the Nehru Stadium here, the first thing that Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi did was to declare a cash award of Rs 1 lakh to each of the Indian team members. What is surprising is that the Assam Government is yet to disburse cash awards that Gogoi had announced for each of the 148 players from Assam who had won medals in the 33rd National Games held here in February. Assam had won 38 gold, 53 silver and 27 bronze medals in the National Games and became the overall third best team, Gogoi had announced Rs 3 lakh, Rs 2 lakh and Rs 1 lakh each for the gold, silver and bronze medallists, respectively, in individual events. For team events, the awards announced were Rs 5 lakh, Rs 3 lakh and Rs 2 lakh.

The Bowl Championship Series (BCS) might be the worst idea since naming bowl games after their sponsors. How proud would you be to play in the San Diego County Credit Union Poinsettia Bowl? That's its real name - no joke. Instead of letting the teams decide who will win the championship on the field, college football takes the votes of biased sportswriters and coaches in the Associated Press and Coaches' polls, then combines them with some computerized rankings to decide which two teams get to play in the championship game.
Sometimes they get it right, but there have been a couple of instances where undefeated teams got left out, or the computers just flat-out mess the whole thing up. This year, that's not going to happen because this season has made about as much sense as wearing a parka to the beach.
Comedy and war help in novices’ pursuit of sporting excellence
Hang in here with the idea, but if Great Britain does indeed achieve its stated goal of finishing fourth in the Olympic medals table in 2012, we may have to attribute much of the success to a Gulf War military leader. The man in question is Major-General Patrick Cordingley, who led the Desert Rats into Iraq in 1991 – and it is not a case of him leading our troops into Olympic battle. But if you ask a group of the best young sports coaches in the country, they will tell you that they have learnt as much about their trade from this man as any other. That said, they will also tell you about having to learn to be a stand-up comedian and how going house-hunting is important, too. The eight-strong group of coaches officially graduated last night. At a ceremony at The Belfry, in the West Midlands, they were presented with their certificates by Gerry Sutcliffe, the Sports Minister.
£5m pledged for top-class coaches in Scottish sport
A £5m coaching initiative in Scotland, announced in Glasgow yesterday, will increase medal prospects in major championships. Half of the money will go towards employing performance managers or coaches in several sports in order to prepare, competitors up to Great Britain level. The remainder will target more than 8500 volunteer coaches in 21 sports. The aim is to help them gain the UK Coaching Certificate (UKCC). New and existing coaches will be able to undertake these nationally certified courses, with sportscotland subsidising up to 75% of the fees. The lottery-funded project was unveiled at sportscotland's partners' meeting in Glasgow by Julia Bracewell, who chairs the organisation. .
