Redskins' Taylor dead after shooting at home

ASHBURN, Va. -- Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder's eyes were red. His voice cracked and was barely audible. Next to him sat coach Joe Gibbs, barely more composed.Safety Sean Taylor's violent death had left his team in tears and the NFL in mourning."This is a terrible, terrible tragedy," Snyder said.Taylor died early Tuesday of a gunshot wound from an apparent intruder, a tragic end for a 24-year-old man whose life was transformed by the birth of a daughter 18 months ago."We're going to miss him," Gibbs said. "I'm not talking about as a player. I'm talking about as a person."A day earlier, Taylor and his girlfriend were awakened by loud noises, according to family friend Richard Sharpstein, who learned the details from Taylor's girlfriend, Jackie Garcia. He said Taylor grabbed a machete he keeps in the bedroom for protection.Someone then broke through the bedroom door and fired two shots, one missing and one hitting Taylor, Sharpstein said.

Vitale, McNeely lead Huskies' resurgence

Northeastern is nearly two months ahead of last season's pace in the wins column. The No. 16 Huskies have won six games, a feat they didn't accomplish last season until Jan. 26.

The Huskies (6-4-1, 6-3-1 Hockey East) beat No. 19 Boston College (3-4-5, 2-3-4 Hockey East) in overtime Friday night, padding their conference lead to three points. Senior Jimmy Russo scored his first goal of the season with four seconds remaining in the extra period. It was the second overtime goal of his career.

So far in the season, however, Russo's younger teammates are outplaying him. Standout junior forward Joe Vitale has a team-leading 13 points on the season (five goals, eight assists), all of which came in Hockey East play.

Along with Vitale, freshman forward Tyler McNeely has a share of the team lead with five goals.

Late third period goals halt Thunder comeback

BLOOMINGTON -- The Bloomington PrairieThunder staged one big comeback Saturday night at U.S. Cellular Coliseum. | Photo galleryA second proved too much to ask for. After squandering a 3-0 lead, Port Huron bounced back with goals by Brian Felsner and Tab Lardner late in the third period and then held on for a 5-4 International Hockey League victory before a crowd of 3,041.The sputtering Thunder (5-9-0) struggled again offensively for most of the game while suffering its second home loss in as many nights to Port Huron and sixth defeat in its last seven games overall.“We have to win these (home) games or at least get a point," said a visibly frustrated Thunder coach Derek Booth. “Go to overtime or something. We can't give away points, and that's what we've done."It was a different story for the Icehawks (9-8-0), who claimed their third road victory in three days.

Wolves: Telfair, Marbury share a loss

Almost every night that Timberwolves guard Sebastian Telfair can remember, two spotlights beside his Coney Island housing-project court nicknamed so contradictorily shone bright at 10 o'clock, illuminating until midnight pickup games that had started there before noon.On Wednesday night, the Garden was silent, its asphalt and chain-link fencing lit by candles placed across the court in memory of the man who taught Telfair, his cousin Stephon Marbury and two generations of New York City street-ball players the game of basketball. If he had been back home in Brooklyn, Telfair could have seen the vigil remembering the man everyone simply knew as Mr. Lou from the bedroom where he was raised in the Surfside Gardens projects. Robert Williams -- a nursing-home manager by day and basketball mentors to hundreds by night and weekend -- died of a heart attack at age 64 on Tuesday afternoon in his apartment next to the Garden court."If you looked outside the window of my room, right down there was the court," Telfair said.
